1893 Born Georg Grosz in Berlin but grew up in Stolp, Pomerania, now Slupsk, Poland.
1909 Entered the Akademie der Künste in Dresden.
1913 Influenced by an exhibition of Italian Futurists in Berlin.
1914 In November he joins the army.
1915 Honourably discharged from the army on medical grounds.
1916 Grosz changes his first name to George.
1918 Joins the German Communist Party and the Berlin Dada group.
1928 A drawing showing Christ on the cross wearing boots and a gas mask leads to Grosz being tried for blasphemy.
1932 Grosz is invited to teach for two terms at the Arts Student League in New York.
1933 He emigrates to the United States.
1937 His works are displayed by the Nazis with those of Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall and others in an exhibition of ‘degenerate’ art.
1959 Returns to West Berlin where he dies soon after his arrival.
