1840 Born in Bordeaux.
1857 Tries unsuccessfully to become an architect.
1864 Briefly attends the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris but quickly returns to Bordeaux.
1868 Writes a review of the Paris Salon and also an article on his friend, the graphic artist Rodolphe Bresdin. Both are published by the Gironde newspaper.
1870–1 Serves as a soldier in the Franco-Prussian War. Settles in Paris but continues to spend most of his summers at his father’s estate at Peyrelebade near Bordeaux.
1878 Visits Belgium and the Netherlands where he studies Rembrandt.
1879 Publishes a set of lithographs entitled Dans le réve.
1881 An exhibition of drawings is held at the premises of the review La Vie Moderne.
1883 Meets the symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé.
1884 Redon is active in organising the first Salon des Indépendants. In J. K. Huysmans’ influential novel A rebours, the leading character collects drawings by Redon whose celebrity grows.
1886 Exhibits at the last Impressionist Exhibition and at Les XX in Brussels. He is now seen as a major symbolist artist.
1890 Begins to use colour and to paint in oils.
1899 Redon’s works are exhibited with those of the Nabis at the Durand-Ruel gallery.
1904 A large selection of his works are exhibited at the Salon d’Automne.
1910–11 Executes murals at Fontfroide Abbey near Narbonne, the home of one of his patrons, Gustave Fayet.
1913 Redon’s work is exhibited at the Armory Show in New York.
1916 Dies in Paris.
