1863 Born in Paris the son of successful saddlers.
1880 Sees an exhibition of paintings by Monet which inspire him to take up painting. His father dies, the business is sold leaving Paul at the sole heir.
1882 Meets Berthe Roblès who becomes his companion.
1884 Signac is a founder member of the Salon des Indépendants; he meets Georges Seurat, who is exhibiting Bathers at Asnières, Henri Edmond Cross and Charles Angrand. Together they form the Société des Artistes Indépendants and hold a group exhibition later in the year.
1886 Berthe Morisot invites him to exhibit at the last Impressionist exhibition.
1887 Meets van Gogh who is influenced by Signac’s divisionist style.
1888 Exhibits at Les XX in Brussels.
1889 Visits van Gogh in Arles. Theo van Gogh thanks Signac for his kindness.
1892 Sails his new yacht Olympia from Brittany to the Mediterranean via the Canal du Midi. Rents a house in St Tropez. Marries Berthe Roblès.
1899 Publishes D’Eugène Delacroix au néo-impressionnisme which is a defence of Neo-Impressionist theories and is very well received in artistic circles.
1902 First one-man exhibition at Siegfried Bing’s gallery in Paris.
1904 Visits Venice. Matisse works with Signac at St Tropez.
1909 Signac visits London, sketches Turner watercolours, meets Sickert.
1913 Rents a property in Cap d’Antibes with his companion Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange. Birth of their child Ginette. Signac supports Berthe and there is no divorce.
1914 Divides his time between Antibes and St Tropez.
1917 Pierre Bonnard and his wife stay with Signac in Antibes.
1929 Signac begins a watercolour series portraying the Ports of France.
1935 Dies in Paris.
