1867 Born at Fontenay-aux-Roses near Paris.
1887 Attends law school at the behest of his father but also enrols at the Académie Julian where he meets Paul Sérusier who has already painted with Gauguin in Brittany.
1889 Sworn in as a lawyer. Becomes a member of the Nabis, a group founded by Sérusier and dedicated to furthering the aims of Gauguin’s art.
1891 First Nabis group exhibition is held in the château of Saint-Germain- en-Laye. Bonnard produces a poster, France-Champagne which is well received; gives up the law to devote himself to painting.
1893 Meets Maria Boursin (Marthe), who becomes his companion and muse.
1896 Bonnard, other Nabis members and Toulouse-Lautrec design sets for the Théâtre d’Art. First one-man exhibition at Durand-Ruel.
1901 Travels to Portugal and Spain with his friend Vuillard.
1903 He is a founding member of the Salon d’Automne.
1906 Exhibits at both Ambroise Vollard’s gallery and Bernheim-Jeune.
1911 Buys his first automobile. Motoring becomes an important part of his life.
1912 Purchases a house at Vernon in Normandy.
1913 Visits Hamburg with Vuillard.
1916 Visits the Somme battlefields.
1925 Marries Marthe who suffers from ill health and becomes increasingly paranoid, discouraging visits from friends and fellow artists.
1926 Purchases a small villa ‘Le Bosquet’ at Le Cannet in the south of France. Travels to the USA to serve on the jury of the Carnegie International Exhibition.
1927 Le Bosquet becomes his main home. Retains properties in Normandy and Paris.
1942 Madame Bonnard dies.
1947 Bonnard dies at Le Cannet.
