1780 Born in Montauban near Toulouse, the son of a painter and sculptor.
1797 After receiving instruction from his father and attending the academy at Toulouse, he enters the studio of David in Paris.
1801 Wins the Prix de Rome.
1806 Travels to Rome to take up his position at the Académie de France.
1808 Sends two paintings back to Paris but their reception is unenthusiastic.
1813 Completes commissions for the Napoleonic administration in Rome. Marries Madeleine Chapelle.
1815 The fall of the Napoleonic regime in Italy sharply reduces commissions.
1819 Further submissions to the Paris Salon are greeted with little interest.
1820 Moves to Florence.
1824 Entry into Paris of the Future Charles V and the Vow of Louis XIII are exhibited at the Salon and are received favourably.
1825 Ingres is awarded the Cross of the Légion d’Honneur. Opens a studio in Paris taking in students.
1834 Again disappointed by the reception of a painting at the Salon, Ingres leaves Paris to become director of the Académie de France in Rome.
1840 Antiochus and Stratonice, started in 1807 is delivered to the Duc d’Orléans in Paris. When exhibited, the picture is greeted with acclaim.
1841 Returns to Paris.
1849 Ingres becomes vice-president of the École des Beaux-Arts. In July his wife Madeleine dies. Ingres is devastated and ceases to work for some time.
1852 His spirits are raised by his second marriage to Delphine Ramel.
1867 Dies in Paris.
