1483 Born in Urbino – his father Giovanni Santi was a painter at the Montefeltro court in Urbino.
1500? He is probably a pupil of Perugino at about this time.
1504 Raphael moves to Florence. He becomes friendly with local artists, particularly Fra Bartolommeo and studies the work of Leonardo, Michelangelo and Donatello.
1508 Raphael is summoned to Rome to work for Pope Julius II primarily on the decoration of the Vatican Palace; first on the Stanza della Segnatura. Michelangelo is working on the Sistine ceiling at the time.
1512 Probable completion of the frescoes for the Stanza della Segnatura. Begins work on the Stanza d’Eliodoro. Also working on a number of commissions for altarpieces.
1514 Pope Leo X names Raphael as the architect of St Peter’s in succession to Bramante who dies in April. Completes fresco decoration of the Stanza d’Eliodoro and starts on the Stanza dell’Incendio.
1515 Works on tapestry designs for the Sistine Chapel (Cartoons now in the V & A). Writes an open letter to the Pope appealing for an end to the destruction of archaeological remains.
1517 Starts work on his last altarpiece, The Transfiguration which is left unfinished at his death.
1518 Completes plans for a villa, to be sited just outside Rome, for Cardinal Giulio de’ Medici.
1520 Dies in Rome (April) at the age of 37 at the height of his powers.
