1841 Born in Limoges, the son of a tailor, the sixth of seven children.
1844 The family moves to Paris.
1854 Renoir is apprenticed to a porcelain painter.
1861 Studies at the studio of Charles Gleyre — meets Monet, Sisley and Bazille.
1862 Admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts.
1864 Shares a flat in the Batignolles area of northern Paris with Bazille.
1869 Works with Monet at La Grenouillère, a popular bathing place near Bougival just outside Paris. Their collaboration is a milestone in the creation of Impressionism.
1870 After France’s declaration of war on Prussia, Renoir is drafted into the cavalry.
1871 After contracting dysentery he is demobilised in March.
1873 Exhibits at the Salon des Refusés.
1874 Renoir plays a central role in the organisation of the first group exhibition of the Société Anonyme Co-opérative d’ Artistes-Peintres, Sculpteurs etc.
1876 Shows 15 paintings at the Second Impressionist Exhibition.
1877 Shows 21 paintings at the Third Impressionist Exhibition.
1879 Refuses to take part in the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition.
1880 Stays on the Île de Chatou, working on The Boating Party.
1881 Travels to Algeria. Whistler visits him at Chatou. Makes an extended tour of Italy.
1882 Visits Wagner in Palermo. Returns to France working with Cézanne at L’Estaque.
1885 Renoir’s first son, Pierre is born to Aline Charigot, his long-term companion.
1886 Exhibits eight paintings at Les XX in Brussels and 38 paintings at a New York exhibition organised by Durand-Ruel.
1890 Marries Aline Charigot.
1892 Visits Madrid and Seville.
1894 On the death of Gustave Caillebotte, Renoir is named as his executor. Jean Renoir is born in Paris.
1898 Sells a Degas painting, a gift from Caillebotte’s collection. This leads to a quarrel with Degas.
1900 Awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.
1904 One room in the Salon d’Automne is devoted to Renoir.
1907 Settles in Cagnes in the south of France. Suffers from severe rheumatism.
1919 Made a Commandeur de la Légion d’Honneur. Dies at Cagnes.
