1887 Born in Vitebsk, Belarus.
1907 Begins three years of studies at St Petersburg.
1910 Moves to Paris where he meets Amedeo Modigliani.
1912 Exhibits at the Salon des Indépendents.
1914 A retrospective exhibition of Chagall’s work is mounted in Berlin by the German gallery owner Herwath Walden.
1914 Travels from Vitebsk intending to stay for a month or two, but the outbreak of war prevents his planned return to Paris.
1915 Marries Bella Rosenfeld.
1917 After the Bolshevik Revolution Chagall is appointed as Commissar for the Arts at Vitebsk.
1920 He is commissioned to design sets for the State Kamerny Theatre in Moscow.
1922 Leaves the Soviet Union for Berlin. His wife and daughter join him there.
1923 Moves back to Paris where Ambroise Vollard commissions him to illustrate fine art books.
1935 Visits Poland where he notes the rise of anti-Semitism.
1937 Becomes a French citizen.
1941 After a period of imprisonment in Vichy France he seeks asylum in the USA.
1942 Commissioned to create backdrops for the New York Ballet Theatre.
1944 Chagall’s wife dies suddenly from a viral infection.
1946 The Museum of Modern Art in New York puts on a retrospective exhibition of his work.
1948 Returns to France with his partner Virginia Haggard.
1950s Creates a cycle of biblical paintings now housed in a dedicated museum in Nice.
1950 Settles in St-Paul-de-Vence.
1960s Starts to design and paint stained glass – one of his first windows is installed in Metz Cathedral.
1964 Paints ceiling decorations for the Paris Opéra.
1967 Creates stage designs for a production of Mozart’s Magic Flute at the Metropolitan Opera, New York.
1985 Dies at St-Paul-de-Vence, France.
